The course will be drawn from the perspective of the “ocean studies”, a term that has recently emerged within the “blue humanities”. These studies were proposed by geographers and literary and cultural critics such as Philip E. Steinberg, Hester Bloom, Elizabeth DeLoughrey, Serenella Iovino or Serpil Opperman. The “ocean studies” aim to understand the sea and what happens in it by encompassing from matter and dynamics of the sea (opposed to those dynamics of the land), to the relationship of human beings with the sea and the impacts they exert over it.
Students will be able to discuss around the “oceanic studies” from an interdisciplinary perspective. The course offers tools to think the different rhetorics of the sea that shape our way of thinking and interacting with it, which is a key matter to build critical thinking aiming to act with more responsability from a social and ecosystemic point of view regarding the sea, that finds itself in a very fragile balance in present times.
